Say '90s and you'll probably think of crazy prints, baggy jeans, denim jackets and of course cropped tops. Music from the nineties is characterised by teen pop and dance pop. Besides popular music, there were many other genres that have undergone many (digital) changes during this era. In this article, we look at some of the key artists and music styles of this period from 1990 to 1999.
Pop
Thanks to digital improvements this time, the pop scene has been able to tremendously grow. With the rise of TV music channels like TMF and MTV, video clips became essential. You migh remember some famous artists' name, and for some even pop idols such as the Spice Girls, NSYNC, Britney Spears, Take That and Backstreet Boys.
Hip hop
In the late 80s and early 90s is also known as the 'golden age' of hip hop. This golden age was mainly represented by artists from New York. Rappers such as Run DMC, Beastie Boys and Eminem were the first to combine this style of music with rock. Other groups replicated this combining jazz with R&B. During this period, we got introduced to hardcore rap, also known as 'gangsta rap'. Artists like Snoop Dogg and 2pac in particular raised this genre to a higher level.
Artist NOTA - Let Me Entertain YouRock/Grunge
A mix of punk, indie rock and heavy metal, this is probably the best way to describe this genre grunge. In combination with a lot of distortion with the guitars. The genre was created by bands from Seattle, who brought it to the "mainstream" audience. Bands like Nirvana and Pearl Jam were (one of) the founders.
