Every first weekend of June in The Amsterdam Red Light District is crazier than usual. Among the red-lit windows, bars, coffeeshops and canals: jazz in all its forms. The Red Light Jazz Festival welcomes different musicians, bands and ensembles in different types of venues so that everybody can discover the genre, with free admission most of the time. The Gigstarter Team was there, and we now tell you everything about it!
Three days at the heart of the Red Light District
More than 30 bars, venues and other places in the Red Light District welcomed musicians for three days of jazz music. Among those places were cafés, hotels, sex clubs – let’s not forget what the Red Light District originally is, and artists from Gigstarter. The bands Jazzkia or TRUNK. performed several times in the weekend. The Dutch documentary Chet Baker, The Last Days - who tragically died in 1988 falling off the window of his Prins Hendrik hotel room, has also been shown in the week-end.

The Red Light Jazz Festival was celebrating its 5th anniversary this year. The Red Light Jazz, it’s 30 different venues for you to see 70 different artists performing in the mythical district of an European capital city. Gigstarter is very proud to be partner of a festival that throws a light on such an eclectic musical genre. Next year, you will be able to discover artists like the Irene Reig Trio and its Afro American influences or the band Back to Bassax that sounds more Latin.
